How to Avoid Caregiver Burnout

If your partner is sick or you’re part of the sandwich generation, you must be mindful of burning out. The tips below help you minimize your risk for caregiver burnout, including physical fatigue, emotional exhaustion, and compassion fatigue. They also help you remain present and engaged so that you can spend quality time with your loved one.

1. Stay organized

Between your loved one’s doctor’s appointments, medications, and changes to their care plan, it’s hard to keep up. Even if you can keep up, keeping things organized minimizes mistakes when you schedule respite care.

2. Prioritize your health

Your loved one’s health is your top priority, but caregiving is physically and emotionally draining. So, you must not allow your health and wellness to suffer. This includes your mind, body, and spiritual well-being

·         Stay hydrated and eat well-balanced meals

·         Go to the gym or work out at home

·         Get a good night’s sleep

·         Don’t skip your doctor’s appointments

·         Schedule time for rest and self-care

3. Let family help

Whether you’re a spouse, child, or grandchild, we understand that it can be hard to let go. If you have family and close friends who are available to help, accept their help. Even for short shifts, so you can have time for yourself.

4. Schedule breaks before you burn out

The most effective way to minimize caregiver burnout risk is to schedule respite before you need it. Respite is not selfish, it’s putting your oxygen mask on first.

·         Schedule an overnight caregiver for at least a few days a week so you can sleep.

·         Schedule daily breaks, of at least 4 hours a day for rest and self-care.

·         Schedule at least 1 full day off each week, ideally 2 full days off.

·         Schedule 3 to 7 days off every few months. Especially if care extends more than 6 months.

#5 Join a caregiver support group

No one understands like someone navigating the same challenges you are, so consider joining a caregiver support group. Ideally, a local group to get out of the house but explore your options in online communities too. Prioritize groups with the same health condition you’re caring for.
