Early Symptoms of Memory Loss

We’re all forgetful sometimes. We misplace our keys, phone, or other items or we can’t think of the right word. These things happen, especially when we’re tired or stressed. Most of the time this isn’t a sign of dementia or Alzheimer’s. If your aging loved one is increasingly forgetful, it’s important to have their health and cognitive performance assessed. The sooner a decline in memory is diagnosed, the better. Below are some of the early symptoms of memory loss.

1. Frequently forgetting words or using the wrong word

Again, we all forget a word or use the wrong word from time to time. If this increases in frequency or is accompanied by writing or typing the wrong words, it could be an early symptom. Autocorrect mistypes don’t count!

2. Difficulty problem solving

If your loved one displays a newfound difficulty making general plans, solving daily problems, or completing familiar tasks, it’s something to be mindful of.

3. Confusing time or space

If your loved one can’t recall directions to somewhere they visit frequently, can’t recall where they are, or shows up at the wrong time or location, it could be due to declining memory.

4. Increased irritability

If your parent or family member doesn’t seem like themselves anymore or has frequent mood swings, it could be irritability caused by recognizing that they can’t remember. Although they may recognize this change, they may not share it with you.

5. Social withdrawal

As their memory loss progresses, your loved one may stop making social plans, stop going to family events, and skip regular outings. This minimizes the discomfort of being confused, feeling lost, or not being able to keep up with conversations.

These aren’t only symptoms of memory loss

If you or a loved one is experiencing any of the symptoms above, schedule an appointment with a physician right away. These symptoms could be a sign of early memory loss, but they could be caused by a range of factors.
