Maintaining Socialization as Mobility and Dexterity Decline

Maintaining or improving socialization is one of many reasons to consider hiring a senior companion. As mobility and dexterity decline, it’s more challenging to leave the house. Especially for adults and seniors who can no longer drive. Declining mobility can prompt withdrawal from friends and family, which can quickly spiral into loneliness. Loneliness negatively impacts mental and emotional health, which influences physical health. The tips below help keep seniors social.

1. Invest in mobility aids

Mobility aids are essential for safety inside and outside of the home. From a transfer board to get in and out of the car to a cane, walker, scooter, or wheelchair. The transition to using mobility aids is a source of pride for some. So, expect a time of transition for loved ones who are struggling with needing help.

2. Invest in activity aids

There’s an endless range of easy-grip and adaptive aids that enable independence and activity. For example, if your loved one enjoys painting, you can purchase adaptive paint brushes that are easier to hold and maneuver. Explore aids for daily activities, such as eating, and for activities your loved one enjoys most.

3. Increase family engagement

If your loved one isn’t leaving the house as often, ask the entire family to make more of an effort to increase engagement. This includes phone calls, video chats, stopping by to visit, and taking your loved one on outings. Even errands, including grocery shopping.

4. Hire a senior companion

Since you work during the day and have personal and family obligations in the evenings, you may not be available to take your loved one anywhere they want to go. Also, they may not be comfortable asking you for rides. Senior companions can stop by for short shifts 1 or more days a week to socialize during the day and go on outings. They can also assist with things around the house that are more challenging with decreased mobility and dexterity, including light housekeeping, laundry, changing the linens, and meal prep.
