Senior Outings to Stay Active and Engaged

As mobility declines, vision declines, or your loved one loses the ability to drive, it’s important to prioritize social engagement outside of the house. Outings are vital for maintaining independence, quality of life, and mental health. Below are senior outings and activities you or your companion caregiver can accompany your aging loved one on.

1. Going out to eat

From casual dining to a mid-range restaurant or somewhere special, eating a meal out of the house is a nice change of scenery. If needed, it’s easier than ever to find restaurants that can accommodate dietary restrictions. Or a picnic.

2. Time in nature

Head to a local park to take a walk or enjoy the view. If not a walk, have coffee, dessert, or lunch somewhere with a scenic view while you eat. Maybe somewhere with a view of the coastline.

3. Movies

Movies are excellent outings. Modern theaters have wheelchair seating and comfortable reclining chairs. Unless there’s a highly anticipated blockbuster playing, there shouldn’t be long lines or a crowd during the day. Or go at night if you prefer a packed theater.

4. Senior outings and activities

Check your local senior activities calendar to see what your loved one might enjoy. If not a senior center, look for local senior clubs and group activities. Maybe a yoga class, swimming group, book club, or a group that goes to plays, concerts, or sporting events.

Don’t forget all-age clubs, events, and activities!

5. Grandkid’s extracurricular activities

If there’s not time to pick up grandma and grandpa before your child’s next game, choir concert, or activity, a companion caregiver can drive them there, accompany them, and drive them home. Or you can drive them home.

6. Hobbies

If your loved one has a hobby, there’s no need to stop doing it if they can’t drive anymore. Or maybe they want to try new things. From arts and crafts to cooking classes, group board games, birdwatching, or anything they enjoy.

7. Day-to-day errands and activities

Getting out of the house, is getting out of the house. So, even though most things can be delivered and the range of at-home services grows, going on daily errands is a nice change of pace.

·         Grocery shopping

·         Clothing shopping

·         Garden store

·         Hair salon

·         Home improvement store

·         Furniture shopping

·         And more
